it’s easy once you know how.ImageSizer (AIR Application)
Please note: This is the original (out of date) announcement page for ImageSizer.
For the most up to date information on ImageSizer, please see our most recent post. Or to simply grab the latest version of the application, click on the install button to the left of this message. ImageSizer is also ImageSizer is available from the Adobe AIR Marketplace. (It’s easier to keep things up to date with a single download location).
What is ImageSizer?
ImageSizer is an application built to resize, optimize and rename a batch of jpg images producing a zip file containing the images. ImageSizer also allows users to resize images that are greater than 2880px by 2800px, however the resized images cannot be greater than this size. (this limitation has been removed in the latest version of ImageSizer)

Why was ImageSizer created?
I created ImageSizer to batch process my digital camera photos so I could quickly send them to friends/relatives or upload them to Facebook and Flickr without hogging all of my bandwidth! I’ve used other applications such as Shrink O’Matic [http://toki-woki.net/p/Shrink-O-Matic/], Photoshop, etc but I’m not a big fan of having to organise my images into an input folder and specifying an output folder for the images to go once they’ve been processed – this isn’t a great user experience. So I thought I’d use the drag and drop capabilities of Adobe AIR and enable users to quickly drag and drop the images they wish to resize into the application. Once the images have been processed the application produces a zip file for the user to drag and drop into their folder of choice, allowing them to easily save the images where they want to. Because AIR uses the clipboard when dragging and dropping to and from the desktop you can also easily drop the resulting zip file to other programs, like an email.
How was ImageSizer created?
ImageSizer was created using Adobe FlexBuilder, and designed using Adobe Fireworks. I used an asynchronous JPEG encoder for the image encoding [http://blog.paranoidferret.com/index.php/2007/12/11/flex-tutorial-an-asynchronous-jpeg-encoder/] and translated this webpage [http://www.envrac.org/index.php/2008/06/23/181-reduction-de-bitmapdata-smoothing-pourquoi-c-est-pas-beau-et-comment-ameliorer] to create a smoother result than the Flash Player when resizing images. I also used the FZip class to create the resulting zip file [http://codeazur.com.br/lab/fzip/].
Beta Version
This is a Beta version of the application; it hasn’t been fully tested and hasn’t been tested at all on the Mac. The application currently only handles only 10 images as it uses the original image as the thumbnail displayed, which uses a lot of RAM, this is one of the areas I’m hoping to sort out the next time I’m get chance to update the application. (again, fixed in the current version of ImageSizer)
Future Updates
Currently, future updates to the application include allowing the application to resize more than 10 images at once, allowing other image types in the input and output and maybe adding filters to the images using pixel bender (once Cosmo is released!). I’m open to any other updates people feel will be beneficial. We’ve done a lot of updates to ImageSizer – check out the posts on versions; 0.3.9, 0.3.10, 0.4.2, 0.4.3, 0.4.6, 0.4.9 and 0.5.3.
